I once heard a story of a ship that was sinking in the middle of a terrible storm.  It got so bad, the captain called out to his crew, “Does anyone know how to pray?”  One man stepped forward and said, “Yes sir, I know how to pray.”  The captain then replied, “Wonderful, you pray while the rest of us put on life jackets – we’re one short!”

Often, as Christians we pray when things get crazy but the Bible actually tells us to pray always or before the “ship” even starts to sink.  Ephesians 6:18 instructs us “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints -”  When we are watchful and prayerful we are more prepared to be of service to our Lord Jesus and to those around us in troubling times.  Jesus warned us that we would have trouble in this world (John 16:33).  He also made it very plain that we would suffer in it (Romans 8:17), but even that is not worthy to be compared to the rewards in glory (Romans 8:18, 2 Corinthians 4:17).   He has given us precious promises that if we ask anything in His name; He will do it (John 14:14)!   If we know this, why don’t we pray more?  That is because we are in spiritual warfare that is constantly trying to stop us from praying so we’ll be weak and our response must be to pray in the Spirit more when we feel like it less.  Romans 8:26  “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses.  For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”

So be in an attitude of prayer always – because it effects eternity forever!!!
